The School of Dental Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia was established in 1998 in the North Eastern part of Peninsular Malaysia within the Health Campus of Universiti Sains Malaysia. The Health Campus is located in Kota Bharu, Kelantan while the Main Campus of the university is in Penang. The Health Campus also houses the School of Medical Sciences and School of Health Sciences.

The dental school aspires to produce oral physicians who are fully equipped with knowledge, caring attitude and skills of the highest standard. The training includes a thorough understanding of general and oral health problems with emphasis on clinical community dentistry. The dental school offers the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) via its integrated problem-based teaching methodology. The first intake of students in May 1999 graduated in August 2004 upon completion of the five-year programme.

The school offers postgraduate clinical courses in Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, Prosthodontics, Conservative Dentistry, Periodontics, Pediatric Dentistry and Community Oral Health (Dental Public Health). Postgraduate training through research mode in all discipline of dentistry is also available. Initial plans are on the way to introduce other clinical specialty training such as orthodontics. Current research activities cover a broad spectrum of nine niche areas that are biomaterial sciences, oral health management, craniofacial sciences, oral tissue engineering, oral cancer, implants, natural products, oral immunology and medical imaging . The school is proud of its international reputation for research, clinical and academic excellence from a team of staff who are at the leading edge of their profession.
