Background

The Islamic Science University of Malaysia (USIM) is a government funded university that was established in the year 2000. The founding of USIM was inspired by the vision of the then Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, to uphold and integrate Islamic studies into tertiary education and science, thereby incorporating Islam into the national education mainstream.

Unlike the rest of the university counterparts who moved to Nilai, Negeri Sembilan in August 2005, the faculty moved next door to Menara B MPAJ after necessary renovations were carried out to improve the learning and teaching facilities as well as a good working environment for its citizens. This is to accommodate the students as their clinical years will be carried out at the nearby brand-new high-tech Ampang Hospital.

Now USIM has 8 faculties including the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, based in the Pandan Indah campus, very near to the Kuala Lumpur city centre.

The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences began operations with an intake of 29 medical students in 2005. This first batch of 29 have now just graduated as medical doctors and all are serving as medical officers in hospitals within the Malaysian Ministry of Health. At present, there are 317 medical students pursuing their medical training at USIM’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. The faculty was recently conferred full accreditation by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency and the Malaysian Medical Council.

The medical degree offered at USIM is unique where the future doctors are trained not only in the fields of medicine and surgery but also in higher Islamic studies. Compulsory courses include Quranic memorization, hadith and sunnah of the Prophet (s.a.w.), Arabic language, history of medicine in Islam, fiqh and many others. Thus, an all rounded education is provided with the aim of producing medical practitioners who are leaders for the Muslim ummah.

From KUIM and now changed to USIM, FPSK is still one of the highest recognition faculty in USIM yesterday , today and tomorrow.
