KDU College Penang School of Nursing
Background
The School of Nursing and Allied Health (SONAH) was formed in January 2007 after KDU made the decision to make its long awaited foray into the world of health sciences. From its humble beginnings, it is now being led by a team of experienced nurses and lecturers headed by Mdm Teow Gek Kee who has over 30 years of teaching and 40 years of nursing experience. From a small group of 7 students who started with the Diploma in Nursing program, the student population has grown by leaps and bounds to over 300 students. The multiracial group of students, both local and foreign are either self sponsored, sponsored by the Ministry of Health Malaysia, private hospitals or have taken loans from PTPTN. KDU Nursing students acquire their knowledge through lectures, tutorial, guided self study, visits, pre and post nursing conferences, interactive e-learning tools and assignments. The special thing about nursing in KDU is that for the skills component, students are trained in private hospitals like Loh Guan Lye Specialist Centre, Gleaneagles Medical Centre, Island Hospital, Mount Miriam Hospital, and public hospitals such as Hospital Pulau Pinang, Hospital Seberang Jaya, Unit Psychiatry, Health Clinics in Jalan Macalister and Jalan Perak.
