Melaka-Manipal Medical College
Background
The Melaka Manipal Medical College (MMMC) was conceived from the ‘Look East Policy’ of the former Prime Minister, P.V. Narasimha Rao who recognised the need for greater South-South cooperation in the economic, education and social sectors in line with the government’s objective of making the country a leading educational hub in the region and to provide more Malaysian students the opportunity to achieve their aspirations to become doctors and healthcare professionals. This led to the signing of an agreement in New Delhi in 1993, between Manipal University (formerly known as Manipal Academy of Higher Education or MAHE) and the college witnessed by both the Prime Ministers of Malaysia and India. The project is also a tribute to the late Datuk K Pathmanaban, an ex-Deputy Minister of Health, Malaysia who had the vision to partner the project with the Manipal Group, who is the pioneer of private medical education in India, having over 55 years experience in the field of medical education. Dr Ramdas M. Pai, Chancellor, Manipal University, with his vast experience, converted this vision into a reality by admitting the pioneer batch of medical students to the Manipal campus of MMMC in September 1997.
