via the Dobbs Doctors Forum post: Diabetic Eye Screening in PJ
Diabetic retinopathy from the MSO website
Diabetic retinopathy is a serious eye complication which may come about after years of having diabetes mellitus. Screening is an important component of the medical care of diabetic patients and involves examination of the fundus of the eye (using an instrument called an ophthalmoscope) which can easily be done in the clinic or in some cases a more comprehensive eye examination by an ophthalmologist.
Primary care doctors and physicians looking after diabetic patients would be interested to know of the non-profit Retinal Photography Service project run by the Malaysian Society of Ophthalmology. The advantage is that the examination gives a wider field of view and also an examination record.
The project is by referral only and in the Petaling Jaya area. For more information and details on how to refer patients, please visit the MSO Diabetic Eye Photo Project website
For doctors who wish to discuss more with opthalmologists, please join/visit the Dobbs Forum thread on this topic.
