Specialists Register – soon to be compulsory

The Star reports

It will soon be complusory for some 5,000 specialist doctors to register with the Malaysian Medical Council under amendments to the Medical Act 1971, said Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.
He said the amendments would be tabled and passed in the next sitting of Parliament.
He said the registry would allow patients to identify the specialists according to their respective fields and expertise.
He added that the registry, to be made accessible via the internet, would also allow the authorities to monitor foreign doctors practising in Malaysia.

This is long overdue. The Star did not mention the NSR website but the link is http://www.nsr.org.my and can be also found in the MMR’s Government and Medical Departments page of links. Specialists who until now have procrastinated should quickly register with the NSR. If they fulfill the accreditation guidelines set out in the NSR site, it should not be a problem.
