Blood transfusion and religious preferences

Recently there has been a discussion in the Doctors only forum, Dobbs (a closed group but registration is free for all Malaysian doctors), on some patients being particular about blood transfusion on the basis of their religious belief.
In the case of Muslim blood donors and recipients, one of our fellow Muslim doctors has pointed out this Fatwa
Derma Darah Dan Penggunaan Darah Orang Islam Kepada Orang Bukan Islam Dan Sebaliknya

The 4th Muzakarah (Conference) of the Fatwa Committee National Council of Islamic Religious Affairs Malaysia held on 13-14th April 1982 has discussed on blood donation and blood transfusion from Muslim to non-Muslim and vice versa. The Committee has decided that:

1. Blood donation is permissible

2. No need to distinguish between non-Muslim blood and Muslim blood

3. Appreciation in the form of money to the blood donors is not encouraged.

We hope this would be a useful reference for all concerned.
